DIGGING IN THE TRENCH

Christmas break for my kids meant digging a trench from the side of our back yard to the front in the street. Our water line has been leaking for a few months so we are replacing it now before it breaks. We are one of the last of our neighbors to do it.
Faulty pipes were placed in all the new houses when ours was built 16 years ago. There was a class action lawsuit filed and the manufacturer was held responsible.....only up to 10 years. That means thousands of people had to put out the money to replace their lines. Being the self sufficiant people that we are, and having a hard working husband, we did it ourselves. It was a minor inconvience as we had to turn off our water for a few days, but, thanks to a very hard working crew who spent their Christmas break flexing their muscles the new pipe is in and working!!

Wow! Great picture....it looks like this was a VERY big job! Down inside of this wonderful trench was there an OLD pipe that you had to dig up first, then lay the NEW pipe....or did you just dig a trench for a NEW pipe and disconnect the OLD pipe (and leave it buried somewhere else in the yard? The trench seems to be going diagnally across the yard....how did you know exactly where it was running? What is Jennifer doing with that spear looking thing in her hand? Did Joshua REALLY dig a bunch of it? Jon must be really buff with all this exercise. Ask him if he wants to join the swim team now to use those arm muscles!

Wow---What a BIG job! Reminds me of putting in our sprinkler system! Of , course I didn't do any digging, but I did fill a lot of trenches in and boy was I sore! I bet all your kids were sore after that! Good Job:)

The city came out and marked where all the electrical and gas lines were, and we dug a new trench. They did have to dig at each end of the pipe and remove the old pipe and connect the new.
Jenny is helping to loosen the soil with that big spear like thing. Yes, Joshua really dug too. He used the pick axe and shovel, but most of the time he used that spear tool to loosen the soil. He would also dump the wheelbarrow.

Wow! What a big job!!! I am glad that you have such a good hardworking family to get those things done!! Way to go!! I love the pictures!! How long did it take?

Shelly, be glad you don't live in North Texas with our CLAY soil! When it hasn't rained it is HARD....and when it HAS rained, it is mucky!! I remember that Vancouver soil is nice and rich (all those volcanoes with ash and whatnot makes it nice....it is MUCH easier to dig in than our soil.

I never knew that about the soil! Makes sense though! I just thought all soil was this hard to dig!

Hey Amanda, you should see the fruits and vegetables that grow up there in that rich soil!! Every single flower blooms twice as big and everything is MUCH more beautiful!! When I was a girl I used to dig in the dirt all the time. It is less dense than our dirt...although I'm sure if you are digging trenches like those pictured here that it is NOT that easy. I mean, Work IS work!
